Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr

fl. c. 1155–1195 · 12th century · Also known as Cynddelw the Great Poet

Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr ('the Great Poet') was one of the foremost Welsh court poets of the twelfth century. He was poet to Madog ap Maredudd of Powys, for whom he wrote praise poems and an elegy, and later composed for Owain Gwynedd, the Lord Rhys and other princes. Nearly fifty of his poems survive, more than for any other poet of the princes.
