Datong

Also known as Pingcheng

Datong is a city in northern Shanxi province, China, near the Great Wall. As Pingcheng it was the capital of the Northern Wei dynasty from 398 until the move to Luoyang in 494, and the Yungang Grottoes were carved nearby. Later one of the Sixteen Prefectures ceded to the Khitan, it was the Western Capital of the Liao and Jin dynasties, and in modern times it became a coal-mining centre.
