David Friedrich Strauss

1808–1874 · 19th century

David Friedrich Strauss was a German theologian and writer from Ludwigsburg, a pupil of Ferdinand Christian Baur at Tübingen. His Life of Jesus (1835–1836) treated the gospel miracles as myths shaped by early Christian belief, caused a sensation and cost him his academic career. It became a founding work of the historical study of Jesus and was translated into English by George Eliot.
