Decimal military organisation

Also known as decimal military system, decimal organisation

Decimal military organisation is a system of dividing an army into units of ten, a hundred, a thousand and ten thousand, each under its own commander. Common among steppe peoples, it was used by the Xiongnu Empire and later underpinned the armies of the Mongols and the Timurid Empire, allowing large mobile forces to be mobilised and controlled efficiently.
