Demetrias

c. 293 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Demetrias was a Greek city on the Pagasetic Gulf in Thessaly, near modern Volos, founded by Demetrius Poliorcetes around 293 BCE by merging the populations of nearby towns. With Chalcis and Corinth it was one of the 'fetters of Greece', the fortresses through which the Antigonid kings of Macedon controlled Greece. Its ruins lie south of Volos.
