Description de l'Égypte

1809–1829 · 19th century

The Description de l'Égypte is a large illustrated survey of ancient and modern Egypt and its natural history, compiled by the scholars who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's expedition of 1798–1801. Published by the French government in many volumes between 1809 and 1829, its plates of temples, monuments, plants and daily life greatly stimulated European interest in Egypt and helped lay the foundations of Egyptology.
