Battle of the Pyramids
The Battle of the Pyramids was fought on 21 July 1798 at Embabeh on the west bank of the Nile, near Cairo, during the French campaign in Egypt. Napoleon Bonaparte's army, formed in infantry squares, repelled the charges of the Mamluk cavalry of Murad Bey and inflicted heavy losses at small cost. The victory opened Cairo to the French and broke Mamluk rule in Lower Egypt.
