Dies irae

13th century at the latest (manuscript of 1253–1255) · 13th century

The Dies irae, "the Day of Wrath", is a Latin sequence, a hymn of the Mass. It is attributed either to the Franciscan Thomas of Celano (1200–1265) or to Latino Malabranca Orsini (d. 1294), lector at the Dominican house of studies at Santa Sabina in Rome; some sources take it back to Gregory the Great, Bernard of Clairvaux or Bonaventure. It dates from the 13th century at the latest.
