Dionysius of Phocaea

early 5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Dionysius of Phocaea was a Greek naval commander during the Ionian Revolt against Persia. Before the Battle of Lade in 494 BCE the Ionian fleet put him in charge of its training, though Herodotus says the crews soon tired of his hard drill. After the defeat at Lade he sailed to Phoenicia, captured merchant ships and then became a pirate off Sicily, attacking Carthaginian and Etruscan shipping.
