Dominican War of Independence

1844–1856 · 19th century

The Dominican War of Independence was the war by which the Dominican Republic won its independence from Haiti, which had ruled the whole of Hispaniola since 1822. Independence was proclaimed in Santo Domingo on 27 February 1844, and Dominican forces repelled a series of Haitian invasions until 1856. Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella are honoured as the founders of the nation.
