Battle of Las Carreras

1849 · 19th century · Part of the Dominican War of Independence

The Battle of Las Carreras was fought in April 1849 near Baní in the Dominican Republic, where Dominican forces under Pedro Santana defeated the invading Haitian army of President Faustin Soulouque. The victory checked Haiti's attempts to reconquer the eastern part of Hispaniola. Soulouque, who later ruled as Emperor Faustin I, invaded again in 1855–1856 and was again defeated.
