Battle of Santomé

1855 · 19th century · Part of the Dominican War of Independence

The Battle of Santomé was fought on 22 December 1855 near San Juan de la Maguana in the west of the Dominican Republic, when Dominican troops defeated an invading army of the Haitian emperor Faustin Soulouque. Together with the battle of Sabana Larga in January 1856, it ended Soulouque's last attempt to reconquer the eastern part of Hispaniola and badly damaged his prestige in Haiti.
