Battle of Sabana Larga

1856 · 19th century · Part of the Dominican War of Independence

The Battle of Sabana Larga was fought on 24 January 1856 near Dajabón in the north-west of the Dominican Republic. Dominican forces defeated the army of the Haitian emperor Faustin Soulouque, ending his last attempt to reconquer the eastern part of Hispaniola. The defeat badly damaged Soulouque's prestige and contributed to his overthrow in 1859.
