Donyö Dorje

d. 1512 · 16th century · Also known as Donyo Dorje

Donyö Dorje was the most powerful ruler of the Rinpungpa dynasty of Tsang in central Tibet. Around 1498 his forces took control of the Lhasa region, and as patron of the Karma Kagyu school he barred Gelug monks from Lhasa's Great Prayer Festival until 1517. His reign marked the height of Rinpungpa dominance over the Phagmodrupa rulers.
