Drobeta-Turnu Severin

Also known as Turnu Severin

Drobeta-Turnu Severin is a city in south-western Romania on the Danube, just below the Iron Gates gorge. On the site of the Roman town of Drobeta, where Apollodorus of Damascus built Trajan's bridge across the Danube in 105, a medieval fortress, Severin, was raised, and it was the seat of the Hungarian Banate of Severin from the 13th century. The town later became part of Wallachia and grew as a Danube port in the 19th century.
