Duke of Aveiro

1535–1759 · 16th century · Also known as House of Aveiro

Duke of Aveiro was a Portuguese ducal title created in 1535 for João de Lencastre, a grandson of King John II. The dukes were among the richest nobles of Portugal and held lands in Brazil, including the Captaincy of Porto Seguro. The title was extinguished when the 8th duke was executed in 1759 for alleged involvement in an attempt on the life of King Joseph I.
