Edict of Pîtres

864 · 9th century

The Edict of Pîtres was a set of laws issued by the West Frankish king Charles the Bald at an assembly at Pîtres on the Seine in June 864. It reformed the coinage, ordering a standard silver penny struck at a limited number of mints, and ordered fortified bridges on the rivers to stop Viking raiders from sailing inland. It also forbade the sale of weapons and horses to the Vikings.
