Edmund Andros

1637–1714 · 17th century · Also known as Sir Edmund Andros

Edmund Andros was an English colonial administrator who governed New York from 1674 to 1681. In 1686 he became governor of the Dominion of New England, which merged the northern colonies under royal rule without elected assemblies. His rule was deeply resented, and after news of the Glorious Revolution Boston rose and deposed him in 1689. He later governed Virginia.
