Efik

Also known as Efik people

The Efik are a people of south-eastern Nigeria, living mainly around Calabar in Cross River State and speaking a language closely related to Ibibio. Settling on the Calabar River in the 17th century, they became middlemen in the Atlantic slave trade and later the palm-oil trade, governed through trading houses and the Ekpe society. Their language spread widely as a regional lingua franca and through missionary publications.
