Cross River State is a state in south-eastern Nigeria, bordering Cameroon, with its capital at Calabar. Created in 1967 as South-Eastern State, it took its present name in 1976 and lost its western part to the new Akwa Ibom State in 1987. It contains the old Efik trading towns of Calabar and the forests of Cross River National Park.
