Egba United Board of Management

1865 · 19th century

The Egba United Board of Management was a government set up at Abeokuta in 1865 by George William Johnson, a Saro returnee from Sierra Leone, to give the Egba a modern administration able to resist British pressure from Lagos. It collected customs duties, issued regulations and dealt with foreign powers in the name of the Alake. It lost influence after the expulsion of Europeans from Abeokuta in 1867 and faded in the following decade.
