Gbadebo I
Gbadebo I was the Alake of Abeokuta, paramount ruler of the Egba in south-western Nigeria, from 1898 until his death in 1920. His reign coincided with the reformed Egba United Government, which ran its own treasury, courts and roads under British influence, and in 1904 he visited England and met Edward VII. After disturbances in 1914 Egba independence ended and Abeokuta was absorbed into Nigeria.
