El Alto

El Alto is a city on the Altiplano of Bolivia, on the plateau rim above La Paz, at an altitude of about 4,150 metres. Once a suburb, it grew rapidly from migrants from the countryside and former miners, became a separate municipality in 1985, and is now one of the largest cities in Bolivia, with a mainly Aymara population. It was the centre of the protests of the Gas War of 2003.
