c. 1012 · 11th century

El Atteuf is the oldest of the five fortified towns of the Mzab valley in the Algerian Sahara, founded by Ibadi Berbers around 1012. Its houses climb a hill around the mosque in the compact style of the valley. Its Sidi Brahim mosque influenced the architect Le Corbusier, and the town is part of the M'zab Valley World Heritage Site.
