El Badi Palace

1578–c. 1593 · 16th century · Also known as Badi Palace

The El Badi Palace is a ruined palace in Marrakesh built by the Saadi sultan Ahmad al-Mansur from 1578, after his victory at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir. Decorated with Italian marble, gold and onyx around a vast courtyard of pools and gardens, it was famed as one of the most splendid palaces of its age. The Alawite sultan Moulay Ismail stripped it of its materials in the late 17th century.
