El Alamein
El Alamein is a town on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, about 100 kilometres west of Alexandria. In 1942 it gave its name to two battles of the Second World War: in July the British Eighth Army halted the Axis advance on Egypt there, and in October and November Montgomery's victory forced Rommel into retreat.
