Eldena Abbey
Eldena Abbey was a Cistercian monastery near Greifswald on the Pomeranian coast, founded in 1199 under Prince Jaromar I of Rügen. The monks cleared land, promoted German settlement and founded the salt-trading settlement that grew into Greifswald. The abbey was dissolved in the Reformation, and its brick Gothic ruins were later painted by Caspar David Friedrich.
