Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, won fame as a general for Spain, defeating the French at St Quentin in 1557. The Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559 restored his duchy, occupied by France, and he moved the capital from Chambéry to Turin.
