Eskom

1923– · 20th century · Also known as Electricity Supply Commission

Eskom is South Africa's state-owned electricity utility, founded in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission. It generates most of the country's power, largely from coal, and built one of the largest utilities in the world. From 2007 shortages of generating capacity, ageing plants, debt and corruption led to repeated rolling blackouts, known as load-shedding.
