Esquipulas Peace Agreement
The Esquipulas Peace Agreement, or Esquipulas II, was signed on 7 August 1987 in Guatemala City by the presidents of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, following a first summit at Esquipulas in Guatemala in 1986. Based on a plan by the Costa Rican president Óscar Arias, it committed the governments to ceasefires, national reconciliation, democratisation and an end to support for insurgents, opening the way to peace in Central America.
