Ethan Allen

1738–1789 · 18th century

Ethan Allen was an American frontiersman, land speculator and revolutionary leader, a founder of Vermont. As leader of the Green Mountain Boys he resisted New York's claims to the New Hampshire Grants and in 1775 captured Fort Ticonderoga. Captured by the British in Canada later that year, he was a prisoner until 1778. With his brothers he later held secret talks with British Canada about Vermont's future.
