New Hampshire Grants

1749–1764 · 18th century

The New Hampshire Grants were land grants made between 1749 and 1764 by Governor Benning Wentworth in the territory west of the Connecticut River, which New York also claimed. In 1764 the Crown ruled for New York, leading to conflict with the settlers, who organised the Green Mountain Boys under Ethan Allen. The settlers declared the independent Vermont Republic in 1777.
