Merrimack River
The Merrimack River rises in New Hampshire and flows about 190 km south and then east through Massachusetts to the Atlantic at Newburyport. Early colonial grants used it as a boundary, and its valley was home to Pennacook and other Abenaki communities. In the 19th century its water power drove the textile mills of Lowell, Lawrence and Manchester.
