Penobscot

The Penobscot are an Algonquian-speaking Indigenous people of the Penobscot river valley in Maine, members of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Under leaders such as Madockawando they traded with and fought both the French and the English in the colonial wars. Their reservation is centred on Indian Island near Old Town, and with the Passamaquoddy they secured the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act of 1980.
