Euridice (Peri)

1600 · 17th century

Euridice is an opera by Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Ottavio Rinuccini, first performed on 6 October 1600 at the Pitti Palace in Florence during the celebrations for the wedding of Maria de' Medici and Henry IV of France. Based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, it is the oldest opera whose music has survived, and its recitative showed the new style of the Florentine Camerata.
