Florentine Camerata

Also known as Camerata de' Bardi

The Florentine Camerata was a circle of humanists, poets and musicians who met in Florence in the 1570s and 1580s, chiefly at the house of Count Giovanni de' Bardi. Members such as Vincenzo Galilei and Giulio Caccini sought to revive the expressive power of ancient Greek drama through solo song with simple accompaniment. Their ideas led to monody and to the first operas, staged in Florence around 1600.
