Jacopo Peri

1561–1633 · 17th century

Jacopo Peri was a Florentine composer and singer associated with the Florentine Camerata and the Medici court. His Dafne of about 1598, now largely lost, is regarded as the first opera, and his Euridice, performed at the Pitti Palace in 1600 for the wedding of Maria de' Medici and Henry IV of France, is the earliest opera whose music survives. He developed the recitative style that underlay the new genre.
