Evliya Çelebi

1611–c. 1684 · 17th century

Evliya Çelebi was an Ottoman traveller and writer from Istanbul who spent some forty years journeying through the Ottoman Empire and neighbouring lands. His ten-volume Seyahatname, or 'Book of Travels', describes cities, monuments, customs and languages from the Balkans and Vienna to Egypt, the Caucasus and Iran, including a vivid account of the court of the Kurdish emir of Bitlis in 1655. It is a major source for the 17th-century Ottoman world.
