Farrukhan the Great

r. c. 712–728 · 8th century

Farrukhan the Great was the ispahbad of Tabaristan, the mountainous Caspian province of northern Iran, and the most powerful ruler of the Dabuyid dynasty. In 717 he defeated the invading army of the Umayyad general Yazid ibn al-Muhallab in the forests of the Alborz, forcing a treaty in which he paid only a modest tribute. His victory preserved the Dabuyids' independence for another generation.
