Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba

Also known as Duke of Alba

Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, was a Spanish general and statesman. As governor of the Netherlands from 1567 he carried out harsh repression of the Dutch revolt. Accounts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth cite his terror as a contrast to the religious tolerance established by the Warsaw Confederation of 1573.
