Filipe dos Santos

d. 1720 · 18th century

Filipe dos Santos was a muleteer and leader of the revolt of Vila Rica, now Ouro Preto, in 1720, against the crown's new smelting houses, through which the royal fifth on gold was to be collected. The governor, the Count of Assumar, crushed the rising and had him executed. Soon afterwards the crown made Minas Gerais a separate captaincy.
