Inconfidência Mineira

1789 · 18th century · Also known as Minas Conspiracy

The Inconfidência Mineira was a conspiracy for independence from Portugal among officers, priests, poets and landowners of Vila Rica, Minas Gerais, in 1789. Angered by heavy gold taxes and inspired by the American Revolution, they planned a rising for the day of a new tax levy. Betrayed before it began, the plotters were arrested, and their leader Tiradentes was hanged in 1792.
