Flatters expedition
The Flatters expedition was a French mission led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Flatters to survey a route for a railway across the Sahara. On its second journey in February 1881 it was attacked by Kel Ahaggar Tuareg in the Ahaggar region; Flatters and most of the party were killed. The disaster halted French plans for the central Sahara for some two decades.
