Moussa ag Amastan

c. 1867–1920 · 20th century

Moussa ag Amastan was amenokal, or paramount chief, of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg of the central Sahara from 1905 until his death in 1920. After French forces defeated the Tuareg at Tit in 1902 he submitted to French rule and became a close friend of the hermit Charles de Foucauld at Tamanrasset. He kept the Kel Ahaggar out of the Senussi-led Tuareg revolt of 1916–1917.
