Fossa Carolina

793 · 8th century · Also known as Karlsgraben

The Fossa Carolina was a canal that Charlemagne ordered dug in 793 near Treuchtlingen in Bavaria to link the Rhine and Danube river systems through the Altmühl and the Rezat. The work was abandoned unfinished, apparently because of rain and soft ground, but a stretch of the ditch survives as a pond and earthworks.
