Francisco Hernández de Córdoba (Yucatán conquistador)
Francisco Hernández de Córdoba was a Spanish settler of Cuba who led the first European expedition to reach the Yucatán peninsula in 1517. His ships sighted the coastal town of Ecab, which the Spaniards called 'Gran Cairo', and he was badly wounded in fighting with the Maya at Champotón. He died soon after returning to Cuba, but his reports prompted the expeditions that followed.
