1641–1691 · 17th century · Also known as Louvois, Marquis de Louvois

François-Michel le Tellier, Marquis de Louvois, was French secretary of state for war under Louis XIV, in succession to his father Michel Le Tellier. He reorganised the army, improving supply, discipline, recruitment and the system of magazines, and built it into the largest standing army in Europe. He was a leading influence on the king's wars and on the harsh treatment of the Huguenots and of the Palatinate in 1689.
