Frederick III of Wied

1618–1698 · 17th century · Also known as Friedrich III of Wied

Frederick III of Wied was a German count who founded the town of Neuwied on the Rhine in 1653, near a village ruined in the Thirty Years' War. To attract settlers he promised freedom of religion and trade privileges, and Neuwied became a refuge for religious minorities, including Mennonites, Jews and later the Moravian Brethren, and the residence of his descendants.
