Futa Toro

Also known as Fouta Toro

Futa Toro is a region along the middle Senegal river, on the border of present-day Senegal and Mauritania, home of the Fulbe and Toucouleur peoples. It was the seat of the Denianke kingdom from the 16th century, until Muslim clerics overthrew it and founded an Islamic imamate in 1776. Futa Toro was the homeland of El Hadj Umar Tall and came under French rule in the late 19th century.
