r. 989–c. 1020 · 11th century

Gagik I of Armenia was a king of the Bagratid dynasty who ruled Armenia from 989 until about 1020, the period of the kingdom's greatest prosperity. From his capital at Ani he extended Bagratid authority over rival Armenian princes, and his reign saw major building, including the completion of Ani Cathedral by the architect Trdat in 1001. After his death the kingdom was divided between his sons Hovhannes-Smbat and Ashot IV.
